Naiko | 内湖

This interior design project was created for a 13.7m × 11.6m space in a former sake brewery located in the historic castle town district of Omihachiman City. It extensively uses reed strand boards. Thin, 1 mm-thick mesh boards made from reeds are suspended from the ceiling like curtains. When illuminated from behind these curtains, the space evokes the sensation of looking up at the water’s surface from the lakebed of “Naiko”.
At the center of the room hangs a cluster of reed stalks with seed heads, conjuring the impression of looking up from below the surface of an lagoon toward reeds growing straight into the sky.
Though the curtain appears to form a single flowing line, the mesh boards themselves are made in 910 mm × 1820 mm sheets. To create smooth continuity at the seams, the boards are overlapped in a staggered pattern.

近江八幡の旧城下町街区にある旧酒造所の一画にある13.7m×11.6mのスペースに設けられたヨシ製ストランドボードをふんだんに使った内装デザイン。厚さ1mmのヨシ製メッシュボードを天井からカーテンのように吊るし，カーテン越しに照明を行うことで湖底から水面を見上げたかのような空間を演出している。空間の中央には穂付のヨシを吊るした一画があり，内湖の水面からヨシが真っすぐに生えるのを見上げたようなイメージを生み出している。
カーテンは一筆書き状の連続した曲線であるが，メッシュボードは910mm×1820mmのサイズのため，ボード同士の継ぎ目を滑らかに連続させ，2枚のボードを互い違いに貼り合わせている。
