A house in the house tree

This residence is composed of three rectangular boxes, each rotated in plan and interlocking with one another. The ground floor (GF) of the central box contains a column-free living room and library, with the first floor (1F) accommodating private rooms. The two adjacent boxes are single-story volumes housing the guest room, kitchen, and other functions.
Because sufficient shear-wall capacity could be provided along the perimeter of each box, the required lateral resistance was satisfied within each box independently. As the GF of the central box is column-free, the 1F partitions are designed as non-load-bearing walls, and spans exceeding 6 m use steel beams to control beam depth. To simplify the connection between conventional timber post-and-beam framing and the steel beams, we developed a standard connection detail, which has since been applied in subsequent projects.

平面的に角度が振られた３つの四角形のボックスが重なり合った形状の住宅。中央のボックスの１Fは無柱空間のリビングとライブラリ，その２Fに諸室が設けられている。その両隣のボックスは客間やキッチンなどがある平屋である。各ボックスの外周には十分に壁量を確保できるためそれぞれのボックスで必要壁量を確保した。中央ボックスの１Fは無柱のため２Fの間仕切りは非耐力壁とし，スパンが6 mを超える箇所は梁せいを抑えるために鉄骨梁としている。木造在来工法と鉄骨梁の接合を簡易なものとするため，標準接合法を開発し，以降のプロジェクトでも用いている。
