Bamboo Torch | 竹松明

In Omihachiman City, several traditional festivals known as Taimatsu-matsuri (“Torch Festivals”) are held, in which giant torches made from bundled reeds are set aflame as offerings to the gods. These towering torches, constructed with bamboo and reeds as their framework, can reach heights of 4 to 5 meters.
This project aimed to create a monumental torch using bamboo as the structural frame to enhance the climax of one such festival. While the original plan envisioned a structure over 20 meters tall, it was scaled down to approximately 10 meters due to time constraints for construction. For the joints between bamboo poles, the project employed rope-binding techniques.

近江八幡には，ヨシを束ねた巨大な松明を作り，火を放って神様に奉納する「松明祭り」と呼ばれる伝統行事がいくつか存在する。松明は竹やヨシを骨組みにして作られるため，その高さは4～5mに及ぶ。このプロジェクトは竹を骨組みにして松明祭りのクライマックスを盛り上げる巨大松明を作ろうという試みである。当初は20mを超える高さの計画であったが，制作時間の都合等から約10m程度の高さに縮小して実現した。丸竹同士の接合にはロープを用いた接合法を用いている。
