Reed Cocoon | ヨシコクーン

“Reed Cocoon” is a spherical reed dome constructed in the rear garden of a former sake brewery, located in the historic castle town district of Omihachiman City. The project explores the adaptation of traditional reed thatching techniques to form a spherical architectural volume.
The process began by inflating a 2-meter-diameter balloon, around which CFRP rods were randomly wrapped—ensuring a roughly uniform mesh pattern—to serve as a supporting frame for fixing the reed bundles. After removing the balloon, bundled reeds were attached from the base upward toward the top. The thatching method was learned from local artisans skilled in traditional reed work.
Beneath the structure lies a Suikinkutsu (underground water chime), creating a quiet space where the sound of dripping water gently resonates. A small circular skylight at the top— a quiet nod to the oculus of Hadrian’s Pantheon—crowns the dome, inviting a sense of serenity and quiet reflection.

近江八幡の旧城下町街区にある旧酒造所の奥庭に作られたヨシの新球ドーム。伝統的なヨシ葺き工法を応用し，球体を作ることを試みた。
まず，直径2 mの風船を膨らませ，その周りにCFRPロッドをランダムかつおおよそ網目サイズが均等になるように巻き付けてヨシ束を固定するための下地とする。その後，風船を撤去し，一定量のヨシを束ねたヨシ束を地面側から頂部に向かって固定していく。ヨシ葺きの方法は，地元の職人に教わった。
内部の地中には水琴窟が設けられており，静けさとともに水の音が反響する空間である。頂部にある小さなトップライトは，もちろんハドリアヌスのパンテオンに似せたいと気取った意匠である。
