This project involved the renovation of a single-story traditional wooden house over 100 years old. Achieving both the open spatial character typical of traditional Japanese houses and modern residential performance is a major challenge. In this project, the solution was found through a bold partial insulation strategy.
An L-shaped area on the north and northeast sides was designated as the insulated zone, which also serves as the building’s primary seismic-resisting core. In contrast, the southwest side was maintained as an open Japanese-style room, where fittings can be fully opened to create an expansive interior–exterior connection.
While this approach creates a significant offset between the building’s center of mass and center of rigidity, structural reinforcement was carefully incorporated: bracing members were installed in the attic space above the Japanese-style room, and strong diagonal bracing panels were placed at the boundary between the insulated and open areas to ensure sufficient seismic performance.
